7/20/2012 - County Library - Bus Trip to Lucy the Elephant

Coach Bus Trip to See the World’s Biggest Elephant at the Margate Beach

Come join the adventure to see Lucy the Elephant. She is located along the beach in Margate, NJ and she is six stories high and is listed on the National Park Registry of Historical Landmarks.  Picnic tables are on site for eating out-of-doors.

Lucy is an example of novelty architecture, constructed of wood and tin sheeting in 1882 by James V. Lafferty, two miles south of Atlantic City, in an effort to sell real estate and attract tourism. Lucy has also served as a hotel and restaurant over the years.

The trip includes a tour by friendly, trained volunteers and staff to assist everyone during their visit. On the tour you will learn about Lucy's unique architecture and her history and you will get to climb a spiral staircase through her insides all the way up to the howdah on her back, providing a spectacular 360° view of the surrounding shore area. Originally, the owner was able to show real estate from this point of view.

Children and adults will enjoy visiting the elephant, the oldest example of zoomorphic architecture.

The rest of the time will be spent enjoying the ocean breezes on the beach.

Funding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, the National Endowment for the Arts, the
Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Cumberland County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

The coach bus will depart from the Cumberland County Library at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 13 and return from Margate at 4 p.m. arriving back at the library at approximately 5:30 p.m.  The cost for adults is $17. and for children $14.

All children must be accompanied by adults.  The county library is located at 800 E. Commerce St. (Route 49), Bridgeton, NJ.
