Ages 8-12

Kids ages 8-12 are invited to celebrate Black History Month with a Book Club to Go!
Beginning February 7th participants will be able to pick up a kit containing the book
When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop, discussion

When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop was written by
Theodore Taylor III and illustrated by Laban Carrick Hill. In 2014, Hill was awarded the
Corretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award (Illustrator) for his work on the
book. His stylish artwork shows young Clive Campbell’s transformation into the DJ who
helped launch hip hop in the early 1970s.
