Meet Ned Hector, Revolutionary War Hero, at Cumberland County Library on July 22
On Saturday, July 22, at 2pm, Cumberland County Library will host a free historical program, “A Visit With Ned Hector: Free Black Revolutionary Soldier,” a dramatic live performance featuring American Historical Theatre actor and historian Noah Lewis as Edward "Ned" Hector, an African-American Revolutionary War hero from the Delaware Valley. Private Hector was a free black soldier and patriot in Washington’s Continental Army; he was an artilleryman noted for his courage under fire, who, in 1777, fought in the Revolutionary War battles of the Brandywine (the biggest battle of the Revolutionary War) and Germantown. In 1976, a historical plaque was erected in Pennsylvania personally honoring Ned and the many African Americans that served during the American Revolution. Hear about Ned’s daring in battle, learn about his uniform and soldier’s kit, and get carried away by his enthusiasm for his country and his own fight for liberty. This one-hour program will include time for questions and answers from the audience.
