State Grant Helps County Fight Drunken Driving
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is adding a drunken driving enforcement capability thanks to a recent New Jersey grant. Sheriff Robert Austino said last week the $34,256 grant will pay overtime for sobriety patrols and to buy equipment this year.
Austino said the equipment includes the office's first machine to test for alcohol by analyzing breath. The office used a separate grant to mount sobriety patrols last Christmas. Otherwise, it has not been regularly active in drunk driving enforcement.

in drunken driving detection and enforcement, and been certified on the Alcotest brand machine.
"With this grant, we will be actively working to help make highways in the county safer," Austino said.
The grant is from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. It is the first such grant to a sheriff's office.
