Three years later, in June of 1966, she became a full-time employee after graduating from Salem County Technical Institute’s library aide program. During the time that Mrs. Carney was employed at the Cumberland County Library her primary duties were on the bookmobile. She was the driver starting in 1985. At that time she was a principal library assistant and she continued to drive until 2004 when medical problems prevented her from driving.

When she began working at the library books were stamped with return dates, now they are checked out electronically. The bookmobile also progressed from book card checkouts to wireless ones on computer.

As the bookmobile driver and assistant she has served generations of families, schools, seniors, assisted living centers and the federal prison.

In May 1988, she was recognized as the employee of the month and in June 2003 she was recognized as a volunteer of the 2nd quarter for providing bookmobile service to the Fairton Correctional Institute for the inmates ready for release.

On Thursday, June 9 a retirement party will be held for Mrs. Carney at the Maplewood Restaurant.
