Annual Artists’ Day Saturday in Mauricetown

Saturday, September 14th from 10 am to 4 pm, the Mauricetown Historical Society will host the Annual Open House and Artists’ Day co-sponsored by the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission. This family event features art, music, food, crafts, historic house tours, and a great day in one of Cumberland County’s most historic neighborhoods.
As in years past, the perennial favorites The Snake Brothers and Steve Byrne will return to perform some of their favorite folk songs from noon to 4 pm. This year, the beauty and history of historic Mauricetown will be on display. The Mauricetown Historical Society will have its headquarters, the 1864 Victorian Italianate Edward Compton House open along with its 1830 Abraham and Ann Hoy House, which is undergoing a meticulous restoration.

“One of the efforts of Artists’ Day is to highlight the important work being done throughout the county to preserve our collective heritage,” said Ella Boykin, Cultural & Heritage Commission Chairwoman. “This year we thought it was appropriate and timely to showcase the Edward Compton House, which was just repainted through a grant secured by the good work of the Mauricetown Historical Society.”
Named for the artists who set up their easels around the site, this year’s event brings together a variety of artists from the region. “Art is a driving force for good in Cumberland County,” said Ms. Boykin. “In addition to our history, Artists’ Day highlights many of our local artists painting in the great outdoors.” Members of Citizens United to Protect the Maurice River and Its Tributaries will be hosting a painting tent with watercolors, easels and paintbrushes available for budding artists to try their hand at painting the beautiful scenery of the day.

The grounds of the Mauricetown Historical Society are located at 1229 Front Street in Mauricetown, New Jersey.

This event is funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State and the Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders through the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission.
