Cumberland County Announces Regional Correctional Center Agreement
At its August 19, 2025, Cumberland County Commissioner meeting the Commissioner Board voted unanimously to enter into a regional agreement to join other counties in the creation and operation of a new regional correctional facility, providing a long-term solution to a problem that has existed in the County for years. The regional agreement is the first of its kind in New Jersey facilitate by the passage of new legislation in 2023. A previous attempt to build a new Cumberland County Jail was abandoned in 2020 by that Board. Successive County Boards were forced to scramble to find other options for housing inmates through shared service agreements which are not efficient as to manpower or spending and do not protect the long-term interests of the County.
“We have worked long and hard to find a solution to this problem which we inherited,” said Commissioner Director James Sauro. “Under this agreement, Cumberland County shall move forward with ownership in a state-of-the-art facility implementing forward-thinking solutions”. The new facility will be known as the Southern New Jersey Rehabilitation and Reentry Center (SNJRRC), will prioritize the safety of both the officers and inmates, while focusing on treatment, and will feature state-of-the-art advancements in both design and operation. By focusing on treatment, vocational training, and skill development, the new facility will directly reduce recidivism in the community.
