Stormwater Management
CUMBERLAND COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
WHAT IS STORMWATER?
Stormwater is rain or melted snow that runs off streets, roofs, and lawns, flowing into streams and rivers. Naturally, stormwater soaks into soil, replenishing aquifers. However, in developed areas, hard surfaces prevent this, leading to runoff that can cause flooding, erosion, habitat loss, and water pollution.
Managing stormwater helps protect water quality for swimming, fishing, and drinking. Pollution often happens unknowingly — like fertilizers, car wash soap, or pet waste washing into storm drains during rain.
Simple ways to help:
- Maintain your car to prevent leaks; wash it on grass or at a car wash.
- Use fertilizers sparingly and sweep up spills; never apply before heavy rain.
- Direct downspouts onto lawns, not driveways; plant rain gardens in low spots.
- Maintain septic systems regularly.
- Pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly.
- Store chemicals safely and dispose of them at hazardous waste sites.
- Never dump anything into storm drains and always avoid littering.
